Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa is the most common malignancy encountered in the mouth.

CLINICAL PRESENTATION

Non-healing ulcer Raised rolled indurated margins
  • Variable degree of hyperkeratosis

Squamous cell carcinoma floor of mouth

Squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip (indurated non-painful ulcer)

MANAGEMENT OF SUSPECTED HEAD AND NECK CANCERS

  • Initial consultation in department for Oral and Maxillofacial surgery with a consultant.
  • Biopsy and plain film radiographs and full head and neck examination; photographs

If Non malignant - Review and advise

If Malignant -

  • Further investigations
  • E.g. MRI and CT scans

  • Oncologist

  • Speech therapist

Treatment options

  • Surgery
  • Radiotherapy undertaken at Bristol Royal Infirmary
  • Chemotherapy
  • A combination of the above three
  • Palliative care Links with the in house palliative care team as well as St Margaret's Hospice.

The combined clinics can be very busy. Whilst every effort is made to spend time with the patients and relax them, it is best for them if they are accompanied by a friend or family member.
